Mammillaria supertexta is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet supertexta means '(Latin supertextus) covered'.
description
Mammillaria supertexta first grows individually, later sprouting from the side and forming small groups. The green shoots are almost spherical to elongated. They grow to be 10 to 13 inches high and 8 to 10 inches in diameter. The tightly packed warts are small, somewhat conical in shape and do not contain any milky juice . The axillae are heavily covered with wool so that the warts are almost completely covered. The two central spines are white with a brown tip and up to 3 millimeters long. The 16 to 18 radial spines are slender, chalky white and up to 5 millimeters long. The lowest are often the longest.
The small flowers are more or less purple. The club-shaped fruits are light red to bright red. They are 0.8 to 1.6 inches long and 3 to 5 millimeters thick. They contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria supertexta is common in the Mexican state of Oaxaca .
It was first described in 1837 by Ludwig Georg Karl Pfeiffer . Synonyms of Mammillaria supertexta Mart. ex whistle. are Neomammillaria lanata Britton & Rose (1923), Mammillaria lanata (Britton & Rose) Orcutt (1926) and Mammillaria martinezii Backeb. (1952).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of IUCN is the species as " Endangered (EN) ," d. H. listed as endangered.
