Mammillaria varieaculeata is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). Thespecific epithet varieaculeata means '(Latin varieaculeatus) different-, alternately prickly, stinging, biting'.
description
Mammillaria varieaculeata grows strongly sprouting, sometimes dividing dichotomously and forming groups. The spherical to cylindrical shoots are green to dark green. They grow up to 13 centimeters high and reach a diameter of up to 9 centimeters. The warts are pyramidal in shape. The axillae are covered with 10 to 25 white bristles, which have a length of 4 to 8 millimeters. The up to 5 central spines , less with age, are needle-like and light brown. They get a little darker with age. The thorns formed first are 0.5 to 1 centimeter long and the later formed thorns are up to 2.5 centimeters long. The 17 to 24 radial spines are white, yellowish brown from the base, later dark brown and 4 to 8 millimeters long.
The red flowers measure 1.5 centimeters in length and diameter. The club-shaped fruits are scarlet red. They are 1.5 to 2 inches long and contain brown seeds .
Distribution, systematics and endangerment
Mammillaria varieaculeata is common in the Mexican state of Puebla .
It was first described in 1966 by Francisco Guillermo Buchenau . A synonym of Mammillaria varieaculeata is Mammillaria mystax var. Varieaculeata (FGBuchenau) E.Kuhn (1981, nom. Inval. ICBN -Article 33.3).
In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is called " Data Deficient (DD) ", i. H. with insufficient data.
