Almond (yarn)
An almond was a counting measure and played in trade with yarn - strands a role. It was used for fine linen yarns from fine spinning machines in Bohemia and Austria .
When the yarn was wound onto a counting reel , a number of so-called threads, which differed from region to region, were tied or tied to a bundle one after the other . A certain amount of containers eventually formed the finished strand of yarn or Strähn . One thread was measured by one full turn of a reel. The thread length was therefore dependent on the circumference of the reel.
- 1 thread = 3 cubits (Bohemian) reel circumference = 790 Parisian lines = 1.682 meters
- 40 threads = 1 bundle
- 30 bundles = 1 strand = 3600 cubits
- 4 strands = 1 piece
- 15 pieces = 60 strands = 1 almond
- 4 almonds = 1 shock
For coarser yarns the thread was 4 cubits long.
In Bohemia, according to old regulations:
- 1 thread = 3 ells (Bohemian) reel circumference
- 20 threads = 1 bundle
- 20 bundles = 1 zaspel
- 3 braids = 1 strand
- 4 strands = 1 piece = 2700 cubits
- 15 pieces = 1 almond
- 4 almonds = 1 shock
