Mandrake is a northern German Gothic Metal band.
history
Lutz de Putter founded Mandrake in 1996 in Emden, East Frisia . The name is derived from Mandragora officinarum , the Latin name of the common mandrake, which is said to give eternal life. The band recorded the first demo in 1997, entitled Mandragora Officialis . In 1998 the self-produced debut album Forever followed , which he realized with the help of various guest musicians. The album offered a mix of slow Death Metal and Gothic elements and was from bands like Crematory or My Dying Brideinspired. In 1999 singer Birgit Lau joined the band. After various line-up changes, still without a record deal, the band took up a promo in 2002 with the title Entwine .
In 2003 the band signed a record deal with the German independent label GreyFall, a sub-label of Prophecy Productions . The label released their second album Calm the Seas , followed by The Balance of Blue in 2005 and Mary Celeste in 2007 . Lutz de Putter and Jörg Uken are responsible for all compositions and texts.
