Kayin state

Manerplaw is a town on the Moei River in the Kayin State in Myanmar (formerly Burma).

Manerplaw is barely 5 kilometers from the state border with Thailand , across from the Tha Song Yang district of the Thai province of Tak, and was intended to be the capital of an independent Karen state, Kawthoolei . Until January 1995, the headquarters of the Karen National Union (KNU) was located there under its leader Bo Mya .

After a rebellion by Buddhist members of the KNU, the city was captured by Burmese troops in January 1995 after heavy fighting. In addition to the KNU, Manerplaw also served as a secure base for other Burmese resistance groups, for example the All Burma Students' Democratic Front . The fall of Manerplaw represented one of the worst setbacks for the Burmese opposition in the fight against the Burmese military regime under the State Council for Peace and Development .
