Manfred Becker (President)

Manfred Becker (born August 11, 1938 in Breslau ) is a German Germanist , Slavicist and educator and was President of the Synod of the Evangelical Church Berlin-Brandenburg for two decades .

Life

Becker came from an educated, middle-class Protestant family. After obtaining his university entrance qualification, he studied pedagogy as well as German and Slavic studies. From 1961 he worked at the Central Institute for Linguistics at the Academy of Sciences of the GDR . Due to his active participation in church life in East Berlin , he was elected President of the Berlin-Brandenburg Synod in 1973 - an office he held until 1990. He was seen as a committed advocate of church interests against state wishes, but also advocated that church events not be used for political resistance against the SED policy.

In 1987 Becker gave a lecture in the joint seminar of the Federation of Evangelical Churches in the GDR and the Christian Peace Conference / International in Prague .

In 1990 he joined the SPD and became a member of the SPD district executive committee in Berlin. He also belonged to the SPD Party Presidium East .
