Manfred Birth

Manfred Birth (born July 3, 1943 in Heiligenbeil / East Prussia ) is a German politician. From 1988 to 2011 he was mayor of the city of Gifhorn in Lower Saxony.

Life

His family was expelled in 1947 and fled to Hurrel near Oldenburg . Birth grew up here as the son of a war widow. Manfred Birth has lived in Gifhorn since 1967. He has been married to his wife Heike since 1967. The two have two daughters and two grandsons. Birth was active in the CDU's district executive for a long time . He has been a council member since 1976. He has been honorary mayor since 1988 and took up the newly created office of full-time mayor of the city of Gifhorn on December 15, 2004 as an individual applicant . He was elected with 52.1% in the first ballot. In 1998 he ran as a CDU candidate for the Lower Saxony state parliament, but was defeated by Uwe-Peter Lestin with a difference of 1,427 votes. He was a member of the Gifhorn district council for 18 years and the council of the city of Gifhorn for 35 years. The city of Gifhorn honored him with the titles of "Former Mayor and Honorary Citizen of the City of Gifhorn".
