Athletic career

At the age of 20, Eckardt first played in the 1st soccer team of SC Aufbau Magdeburg. It was the encounter progress Meerane - SC Aufbau Magdeburg on November 24, 1957, the last game day of the 1957 season in the second-class I. GDR League , which ended 4-1 for Magdeburg. Eckardt and Magdeburg had to wait two more seasons until they were promoted to the league in 1959. During this time Eckardt was used in 19 point games as well as later as an attacking player.

From 1960 to 1966 Eckardt played from then on in the top league of GDR football. Since Magdeburg was not yet one of the top teams in those years, Eckardt never got title honors. This would have been possible in 1964 and 1965, when the SC Aufbau won the GDR soccer cup . But in the 1963/64 season Eckardt did not play in the league at all, in 1964/65 only in six point games and was also absent in both cup finals. In 1965 he witnessed the founding of 1. FC Magdeburg, which arose from the spin-off of the previous soccer section from SC Aufbau. After all, winning the cup in 1965 made him play two international games in the European Cup Winners' Cup . In the first round he was used in the second leg against the cup winners Luxembourg's Spora Luxembourg (2-0 win) and in the second round against the Swiss team FC Sion in the first leg (8-1 win). The 1965/66 season was Eckardt's last league season. On May 4, 1966, he said goodbye to high-performance sport in the league game 1. FC Magdeburg - 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig (1: 1). Two game days later, the FCM had to relegate from the league.

In his ten years in the first team of the Magdeburg Club, Eckardt completed a total of 115 competitive games. This included 86 league games with 25 goals, eight national and two European games.
