Life

Legal career

After completing his studies, Götzl began working as a public prosecutor in 1983 and was responsible for economic crimes at the Munich public prosecutor's office for six years . In 1990 he became a judge at the District Court of Munich I , where he worked on civil cases and was an assessor at the Chamber of Jury . In 1992 he moved back to the public prosecutor's office and became group leader for capital offenses . In 1999 Götzl was appointed presiding judge at the regional court and headed the jury chamber. In 2010 he became the presiding judge at the Munich Higher Regional Court , where he took over the 6th Criminal Senate ( State Security Senate) . With effect from December 16, 2018, he was appointed first Vice-President of the Bavarian Supreme Regional Court (BayObLG) , which had been re-established three months earlier .

Important procedures

Götzl led several proceedings that received a lot of media attention, including the murder of Rudolph Moshammer , the murder of Charlotte Böhringer , the war criminal Josef Scheungraber and the alleged Nazi criminal Ladislav Nižňanský . In the trial for double neonaticides , the criminal chamber headed by Götzl sentenced the “death mother” from Haar in February 2010 to 10 years in prison.

Götzl led the main hearing in the NSU trial , one of the longest trials in Germany, which lasted from May 6, 2013 to July 11, 2018.

Personality and criticism

Personally, Götzl is seen as a pleasant and interested conversation partner. In the courtroom, he appears precise and meticulous and is portrayed as accurate, strict and truthful. Despite a sensitive interrogation style, he reacts indignantly and angrily if he has the impression that he has been lied to or lawyers involved in the process are amateurish and unprofessional. Almost all of the decisions for which Götzl was jointly responsible remained in effect, only one of the judgments passed under his leadership by the jury chamber at the Munich District Court I was overturned. After the NSU trial, victim members and their lawyers accused him of technocratic indifference, saying that he read his verdict "coldly".

family

Götzl is married and has two children.

Movie

In the ZDF documentary drama Last Exit Gera - Eight Hours with Beate Zschäpe by director Raymond Ley , which was broadcast in early 2016 , Götzl is portrayed by Axel Milberg .
