Manfred Gerlach (neuroscientist)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manfred Wilhelm Josef Gerlach (born May 10, 1954 in Hammelburg ) is a German neurochemist , neuropharmacologist and university professor whose research focuses on biomarkers of brain diseases, neuromelanin and drug safety.

biography

Manfred Gerlach studied biology, chemistry and pharmacy at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and the University of Bielefeld . He completed his studies in chemistry and pharmacy in 1979 with a diploma in chemistry and in 1988 with the second phase of the pharmaceutical examination. He was awarded a Dr. nat. PhD . He qualified as a professor at the Medical Faculty of the Ruhr University Bochum in 1991 in the subject of clinical neurochemistry. In 1998 the Ruhr University Bochum appointed him an extraordinary professor.

From 2000 until his retirement in February 2020, he was the head of the Laboratory for Clinical Neurobiology and Therapeutic Drug Monitoring at the University Clinic for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Psychosomatics and Psychotherapy in Würzburg.

The Scopus database contains 334 scientific publications (as of April 2020), from which it calculates an h-index of 58.

Research priorities

As part of Parkinson's research, Gerlach played a key role in numerous research groups that contributed to understanding the function of neuromelanin . This is the eponymous pigment of the substantia nigra, an area in the brain in which nerve cells in Parkinson's sufferers die, causing the motor symptoms of Parkinson's disease.

Another focus of his scientific work was the development and identification of biomarkers for the diagnosis and early detection of neurological and psychiatric diseases. Gerlach's particular scientific interest is therapeutic drug monitoring (TDM) as a proactive instrument for improving drug safety in child and adolescent psychiatry.

Gerlach was the initiator and co-founder of the Competence Network Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (TDM-KJP) eV, which set itself the goal of optimizing drug therapy in child and adolescent psychiatry through the multi-center establishment of standardized TDM and improving patient safety. As part of the research network, which has now grown from 11 start-up centers to 42 clinics and institutes in four countries (Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Portugal), a modern, multi-center research infrastructure was created in the form of an internet-based patient registry. Standardized naturalistic observation data or clinical study data from large patient groups can be recorded in this register.

Gerlach was significantly involved in the design and implementation of the multicenter pharmacovigilance project (TDM-VIGIL) funded by the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM). A prospective study was intended to expand the limited data available on the safety and everyday effectiveness of psychotropic drugs in children and adolescents.

Honorary positions

Gerlach also holds numerous honorary positions. Among other things, he has been chairman of the scientific program committee of the World Congress on ADHD since 2007. In addition, he was and still works as a volunteer treasurer for various societies: for the Society for Experimental and Clinical Neuro-Psychopharmacotherapy , the German Parkinson Society, the Competence Network Therapeutic Drug Monitoring Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the Working Group for Neuropsychopharmacology and Pharmacopsychiatry and Parkinson's Foundation, endowment.
