Manfred Harsdorff (born September 11, 1932 in Kiel ; † May 10, 1997 ) was a German solid-state physicist and professor at the University of Hamburg .

Life

Manfred Harsdorff studied physics in Kiel and Hamburg. During his studies in Kiel he worked for several years in the laboratories of the Zeiss Ikon company . He did his doctoral thesis in 1966 with Heinz Raether at the Institute for Applied Physics at the University of Hamburg. In 1971 he completed his habilitation and became a professor in Hamburg in 1977.

In 1978 and 1979 and from 1981 to 1983 he was deputy director, from 1979 to 1981 and again from 1987 to 1997 director of the Institute for Applied Physics.

Harsdorff died on May 10, 1997 after a serious illness.

Services

The work of Manfred Harsdorff and his working group dealt mainly with interfaces and thin layers . The focus was on the investigation of basic processes in nucleation , layer growth and epitaxy . This allowed a better understanding of the behavior of the adatoms and the connection with the morphology of the resulting structures. The aim was to apply the findings in thin-film technology to improve such structures, both made of semiconductor materials and metals .

In the last few years of his career, Harsdorff was instrumental in setting up the Center for Microstructure Research at the Institute for Applied Physics at the University of Hamburg, which was inaugurated in 1996.
