Prof. Manfred Koob

Manfred Koob (born November 6, 1949 in Heppenheim ; † May 5, 2011 in Heidelberg ) was a German architect and university professor . As a pioneer of virtual architecture, he was best known for the virtual reconstruction of the Cluny Abbey and the destroyed German synagogues.

Life

Manfred Koob grew up in Heppenheim on Bergstrasse . He studied architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt , among others with Günter Behnisch . Since 1982 he worked with the help of Computer Aided Design (CAD) and was involved in the development of software for the architects. From 1992 he taught as a visiting professor at the Chair of CAD in Architecture at the Technical University of Darmstadt. In 1995 he was appointed full professorto the Technical University of Darmstadt. Until his death he headed the chair, which was later renamed “Information and Communication Technology in Architecture”, which gained international recognition in the field of computer-aided 3-D reconstruction of destroyed or never realized architecture. Together with Marc Grellert, his long-time research assistant, he founded Architectura Virtualis GmbH as a cooperation partner of the Technical University of Darmstadt.

Services

Manfred Koob saw in digital 3-D reconstruction and computer-aided visualization a "world language that is understood regardless of culture, education and age of people". He presented his visions for a virtual museum of architecture in his work Architectura Virtualis, Concept for the 1st Digital Architecture Museum in 1995. In his work in research and teaching he was responsible for a number of significant digital 3-D reconstructions, which were honored with exhibitions in the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany in Bonn. His use of new media in architecture and their communication was very diverse and extended to visionary projects such as the Digital Virtual Olympic Museum for the Olympic Games in Beijing 2008 and the hybrid exhibit models, which he as scientific director of Architectura Virtualis GmbH within several exhibitions used successfully. During his work , his research assistants Stephen Wittkopf (2001), Marc Grellert (2006), Piotr Kuroczyński (2010) and Mieke Pfarr-Harfst (2010) did their doctorate.
