Manfred Teschner

Manfred Teschner (born October 3, 1928 in Danzig ; † March 13, 2019 in Darmstadt ) was a German sociologist and university professor .

Life and education

Manfred Teschner was born in Gdansk in 1928 as the eldest of three brothers. Abitur in 1953, since 1954 studies of social sciences at the Frankfurt Institute for Social Research and there participation in industrial sociology studies. In February 1958 he finished his studies with the examination to become a qualified sociologist and then became a research assistant at the Institute for Social Research, where he received his doctorate in 1960.

University career

After working at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Frankfurt, he was appointed professor at the newly established Chair of Sociology at the Faculty of State and Cultural Studies at the Technical University of Darmstadt in the winter semester of 1967/68. There he played a key role in setting up the Institute for Sociology and worked there as a university professor until his retirement in 1994. Teschner was also involved in the university policy debate of the 1960s. In addition to the physicist Friedrich Beck and the architect Max Guther, he was a member of the board of directors of the Technical University of Darmstadt in 1969/1970, which led the Technical University in a transitional phase. He campaigned intensively for the expansion of interdisciplinary teaching, especially in collaboration with the architecture department, and he was continuously involved in interdisciplinary research projects.
