Manfred Wagner (* 1959 in Naunheim , today in Wetzlar ) is a German local politician ( SPD ) and has been Lord Mayor of the city of Wetzlar since November 27, 2015 .

Life

Wagner is a graduate in administration (FH) . Professionally, he worked in the administration of the Lahn-Dill district , where he was most recently in charge of the personnel, organization and technology department. In 2003 and 2009 he ran for the SPD as mayor, but was subject to the incumbent Wolfram Dette (FDP).

In 2011 Wagner became mayor of Wetzlar. In the election on June 14, 2015, he was elected Lord Mayor with 60.6 percent. The appointment of Wagner took place on 27 November 2015. He succeeds Wolfram Dette, who no longer took after 18 years as mayor Wetzlar for election.

Disregard of the Federal Constitutional Court

Manfred Wagner gained national notoriety in March 2018 by opposing an order from the highest German court. The National Democratic Party of Germany (NPD) intended to hold an election campaign event in the Wetzlar town hall, at which several bands from the right-wing scene were to perform. The city of Wetzlar, represented by Manfred Wagner as Lord Mayor, tried to prevent this from happening due to security concerns that were justified in his view.

The NPD took legal action, won in all instances and finally obtained an interim order from the Federal Constitutional Court that the hall must be left to it. Manfred Wagner ignored this order of the highest German court and kept the town hall closed. Wagner justified his actions with the fact that the NPD had not met the rental conditions (insurance cover and medical service). The Federal Constitutional Court ruled on the other hand that the city "either failed to assert these reasons before the administrative courts in good time or they were judged to be irrelevant."

In response to this incident, the Federal Constitutional Court informed the local supervisory authority and asked the responsible regional council in Gießen to “investigate the incident and take the necessary regulatory measures”. After their examination, the local supervisory authority came to the conclusion that the city had not willfully ignored the decision of the BVerfG. The NPD filed charges against Manfred Wagner for coercion and infidelity.
