The Ilse manganese ore mine is a disused ore mine in the Hunsrück , south of the Hunsrückhöhenstrasse near the municipality of Bell .

The shaft of the Ilse pit went down to a depth of 20 m, and extraction to a depth of 30 m was planned. The manganese ore tunnels were 10 to 125 cm thick. In the heyday of the pit 20 people were busy to the relative small manganese deposits dismantle .

history

It is assumed that ore has been mined in Bell since the Iron Age. Records report that mining continued continuously from the 18th century , with the Bell Union's first concession allowing ore extraction. Later, the high manganese content of the Beller ore aroused new desires, the Rheinische Stahlwerke took over the mine in 1916 after a legal dispute.

Shutdown

With the transfer of ownership to Barbara Erzbergbau Aktiengesellschaft in 1953, the production in the small mine was running out. The tunnels were properly closed and the mine dismantled. Today only the spoil dump can be seen .
