Mangole is an island of the Sula group within the Moluccas .
geography
Mangole lies east of Taliabu , from which it is separated by the Capalulu Strait ; south of the island is across the Strait of Mangole lies Sanana . The coastline of Mangoles is about 295 km long, the area of the island is 1,228.5 km². The main town of the island is Auphonia in the southwest. Mangole is mountainous and largely forested.
history
Like the other Sula Islands , Mangole initially belonged to the Sultanate of Ternate . The Netherlands made it their colony from 1683 , which it remained until 1949. It was then incorporated into the Maluku Province , after which it was split up in 1999 to form the newly created Maluku Utara Province .
population
Mangole has about 38,000 inhabitants, the majority of whom belong to the Malayo-Polynesian population group. Originally the inhabitants of Mangole probably come from eastern Sulawesi, from where they settled the Buru , Seram and the Sula Islands . The majority of the population profess ethnic religions , but recently the number of professing Muslims has been increasing steadily. The official language is Indonesian , the local language is Taliabu .
economy
The wood industry is particularly important for mangoles. In addition, maize , rice and sago palms are mainly grown; Many people live from fishing on the coast .
