As males in zoology and other scientific and professional fields is a male animal is meant.
Use of language
Männchen is a diminutive form of man . Even towards small boys, its use almost always has a pejorative (derogatory) trait. In earlier times, however, it was a common pet form for men.
For a male sexually mature individual there are some typical words in linguistic usage that are applied unspecifically to certain similar animal species or genera, without taking special zoological distinctions into account: One also speaks of a hunter's term .
