Manordeifi Old Church from the northwest

The Manordeifi Old Church is a disused church building in Manordeifi , Pembrokeshire , Wales . Siw was included by Cadw in Grade II * in the Statutory List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest and is maintained by the Friends of Friendless Churches . The church stands near the River Teifi and the faithful were sometimes surprised in the church by the rise of the river. They were then transferred in a coracle , which for this reason was present on the porch of the church. The water level of the river no longer rises and the church is no longer used for regular services, but the tradition of having a boat available has been retained. When the rowboat was stolen, the locals raised money to get a new boat.

history

It is believed that a church dedicated to the Celtic saint Llawddog has stood on the site of this church since the 6th or 7th century . An inscription on the bell also suggests that the church was later consecrated to Laurentius of Rome . When the parish was in the 12th century established that changed patronage of Saint David . The nave and the chancel of the present church dates from the 13th to 14th centuries, the porch was added later. The building was probably changed in the 18th century and repaired between 1835 and 1844. The church was abandoned as a parish church in 1899. In 1905 and again between 1948 and 1973 the building was renovated. The Friends of Friendless Churches have been looking after the building since 2002.

architecture

The Gothic church is built of stone and has slate roofs . The floor plan consists of the nave and the chancel, a large veranda in the west, the sacristy in the north and a single belfry at the west end. The interior of the church is plastered and painted with chalk white. The floor of the nave is covered with slate and in the sanctuary there is an altar platform open on three sides. The churches contain box stalls, four of which are somewhat larger and probably served the somewhat more important local families; the two easternmost are equipped with fireplaces. Otherwise the seating consists of open pews. The pulpit is simple and built into one of the pews. The baptismal font is square on a round shaft and a square base. The baptismal font dates from the 13th century, the Glock was built in the 15th century. In the church there are some funerary monuments, one of which commemorates Charles Colby, whose killing of a tiger in India is mentioned in 1852.
