Manuel Alday Marticorena (born September 5, 1917 in San Sebastián , † December 28, 1976 ) was a Spanish football player .

Career

Manuel Alday began after the Spanish Civil War , a study of the medicine in Madrid and played in their leisure time football for Imperio FC , a small club from the Spanish capital. When the club took part in the Campeonato Mancomunado Centro in 1939 , they met Real Madrid in the course of the tournament . Alday drew such attention to himself that he was signed by the Royal for the 1939/40 season . Alday then played for Real Madrid for five years and was the club's most accurate player during that time. In the Copa del Generalísimo 1940 he was top scorer with 13 goals and shot his team to the final , which was lost 2: 3 after extra time against CD Español . In the 1941/42 season he was the second top scorer in the league with 23 goals and reached second place in the table with his team. In total, Alday scored 65 goals in 80 first division appearances. At that time he was the club's record scorer in the Spanish league. He also became the club's first player to score five goals in a league game. And his total of nine hat-tricks in competitive games at the time represented a club record that to this day has only been exceeded by Ferenc Puskás , Alfredo Di Stéfano and Cristiano Ronaldo . However, Real Madrid were not a title contender in those first years after the civil war. As a result, Alday did not win a single team trophy. After he only played three league games in the 1943/44 season and had already completed his medical studies at this point, he gave up his career as a football player and became a doctor .
