Manuel Antônio de Almeida

Manuel Antônio de Almeida (born November 17, 1831 in Rio de Janeiro , † November 28, 1861 in Macaé ) was a Brazilian journalist and writer.

Almeida studied art and medicine, making his living as a translator and journalist. His only literary work Memórias de um sargento de milícias , he published anonymously as a serial in the years 1852 and 1853. In it he describes life in Rio de Janeiro in the first half of the 19th century in a naturalistic style. The work received little attention at the time, but has been considered the first great novel in Brazilian literature since its rediscovery in the 20th century .

Almeida promoted the young Machado de Assis . Almeida died in a shipwreck off the Brazilian coast.
