Manuel Antonio de la Cerda y Aguilar (* 1780 in Granada , Nicaragua , † November 29, 1828 in Rivas ) was from April 22, 1825 to April 22, 1826 Supremo Director of the Province of Nicaragua within the Central American Confederation .

Life

In 1811 in colonial New Spain he was Alcalde of Granada and took part in the uprising against the Spanish authorities, to which he himself belonged. After the failure of the uprising, he was sentenced to death for high treason and his sentence was changed to life imprisonment, which he was to spend in Spain. He spent several years in prison, was pardoned in 1817, and returned to Nicaragua in 1820.

In 1823 he represented the Province of Nicaragua at the Constituent Assembly of the Central American Confederation.

After a civil war in 1824 he was appointed the first Supremo Director of the Nicaragua Province. He took up this office on April 25, 1825. He made his cousin Juan Argüello del Castillo y Guzmán his deputy. This formulated an indictment against him before the constituent assembly, which Cerda thereupon dismissed and Juan Argüello made supremo director .

The civil war broke out again and Cerda was offered the office of Supremo Director by the Cabildos de Españoles of Managua and Rivas , which he accepted in February 1827. Juan Argüello rejected the invitation to resign and intensified the civil war.

In June 1828 there was an uprising against Cerda in Managua, which he could suppress and decided to move to Rivas, from where he besieged Granada. After a few months there was a conspiracy initiated by Damiana Palacios de Gutiérrez, the widow of a Colombian official, whom Cerda had fusilated. The conspirators managed to take Cerda prisoner. Cerda was shot dead in Rivas.
