Manuel Figueira

Manuel Figueira (born November 1, 1938 in São Vicente , Cape Verde ) is a Cape Verdean painter.

Life

He studied painting at the Escola Superior das Belas Artes de Lisboa art school (now part of the University of Lisbon ). After graduating, he worked as a teacher and took part in numerous group exhibitions in Lisbon. The independence of Cape Verdean in 1975 brought him back to São Vicente together with his wife Luísa Queirós . There he founded the Cooperativa da Resistência with artist colleagues . This later became the state-owned Centro Nacional de Artesanato , of which he was director from 1979 to 1989.

His studio is in Mindelo's lively Hafenstrasse . About himself he says: "I am a figurative artist, but my relation to color is an abstract one". You can look at your pictures for a long time and you will always discover something new in them.

Manuel Figuera has presented his works in numerous joint and solo exhibitions in Washington , Lisbon , Rio de Janeiro and Seville , among others .
