Manuel Jiménez (politician)
Manuel Jiménez (Jiménes) González (* 1808 in Bayamo , Cuba , † 1854 in Haiti ) was a Dominican politician and President of the Dominican Republic .
biography
During the presidency of President Pedro Santana he was promoted to general in 1844 and belonged to his cabinet from 1844 to 1848 as Minister of War and the Navy. After President Santana resigned on August 4, 1848 for health reasons, a council of state secretaries, including Jiménez González, assumed the provisional presidency.
On September 4, 1848, he finally succeeded Santana as President of the Dominican Republic. During his tenure, many exiled members of the La Trinitaria independence movement returned. Due to fears of an invasion of Haitian troops during the reign of Faustin Soulouque , he tried to strengthen the discipline of the Dominican army.
On May 29, 1849, however, he was deposed by Santana after a coup, so that this took over the presidency again. He then went into exile in Haiti, where he later died.
