Manuel Rivera Hernández (born April 23, 1927 in Granada , † January 2, 1995 in Madrid ) was a Spanish painter.

life and work

From 1941 Rivera studied at the Escuela de Artes y Oficios de Granada , the arts and crafts school, and at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Sevilla , the Academy of Fine Arts of Seville, at which he later took over a professorship.

From 1951 he lived in Madrid and began to be interested in abstract art . In 1953 he took part in the Congreso de Arte Abstracto de Santander ( Congress of Abstract Art ), in 1955 he traveled to Paris , where he got to know informal art .

In 1957, back to Spain , he co-founded the artist group El Paso together with Antonio Saura , Luis Feito and Manolo Millares . A few months later he left the group and began individual work in his very personal style. His preferred materials were wire mesh, wire and iron, which he stretched in wooden frames, which became thicker from 1958 onwards. With this he deepened his study of space and the effects of light and shadow. This is why his work has been associated with Op Art and Kinetic Art . At the beginning of his career, the chromatics, which are based on the noncolors, are characteristic for him, but from 1961 he switched to a more colorful color scheme. The series Las Metamorfosis ( Metamorphosis ) from 1958 to 1963 and Los Espejos ( The Mirrors ) from 1974 are very important for her constructivist tendency.

From 1947 he participated in national and international exhibitions, including the Primera Bienal Hispanoamericana de Arte (Madrid, 1951), the II Biennale of Alexandria , the II Biennale of São Paulo (1958), the XXX Venice Biennale (1959). Since 1970, the Mannheim gallery Lauter has presented his object paintings in cooperation with Juana Mordo, Madrid, and made him known in Germany.

In 1981 he was presented with a gold medal for his services to the fine arts. In 1984 he entered the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando .
