Luis Feito (born October 13, 1929 in Madrid , Spain ; † February 7, 2021 there ) was a Spanish painter . He is one of the most important representatives of Spanish post-war painting who worked in the style of abstract expressionism and Informel .

Life

Luis Feito's art began with a figurative period that did not last long until he experimented with cubism in the late 1950s and finally painted completely abstract .

In 1956 Feito received a grant from the French government. He moved to Paris , where he was confronted with Art brut and with the art of assemblages by artists such as Jean Dubuffet . He began to experiment with materials himself, mixing sand into his thick oil paints and using a reduced color palette of black , white and ocher . In 1959 he was a participant in documenta 2 in Kassel . Feito was represented several times at the Venice Biennale .

Luis Feito was one of the key figures of Spanish Abstract Expressionism . In 1957 he was one of the co-founders of the artist group " El Paso " in Madrid , together with Antonio Saura , Rafael Canogar and Manolo Millares, among others . He belonged to the core of the avant-garde of the Spanish art scene in the late 1950s. In the early 1960s the color red was added as a fourth tone to his painterly spectrum, and his art became more geometric.

In 1981 he left Paris and went to Montreal , where he lived until 1983 when he moved to New York .

His work is exhibited in contemporary art museums around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Musée National d'Art Moderne in the Center Georges Pompidou , the Museum of Contemporary Art in Madrid and the Museo Nacional Centro de Arte in Madrid. Among other things, he was awarded the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Ritter 1985; Commander 1993).

Feito died at the age of 91 at home in Madrid after a SARS-CoV-2 infection.
