Rafael Canogar (born May 17, 1935 in Toledo ) is a Spanish painter and sculptor. He is considered a representative of expressionism and abstract painting and often deals with socio-critical and political topics.

life and work

Rafael Canogar gave up school at the age of thirteen and entered the workshop of Daniel Vàzquez Dîaz (1948–1953) in 1948 to learn painting and drawing.

He designed his first work in the avant-garde style, later he switched to abstraction . He used a sculptural-painterly technique by scratching or pressing the paint onto the flat surface with his hands in order to show that the first gesture for painting comes from inside the artist.

In 1957 he founded the group El Paso from Madrid with other artists ( Antonio Saura , Manolo Millares , Luis Feito , Totoyo Millares ) and the critic José Ayllón and thus also experienced an action painting influence . Between 1957 and 1960 they defended informal art , informalism , and the Spanish cultural opening. From 1965 to 1966 he was a professor at Mills College in Oakland .

In 1974 Rafael Canogar took part in ADA campaigns by the avant-garde in Berlin.

Between 1983 and 1986 Canogar was a director of the Círculo de Bellas Artes de Madrid . In the periods 1981–1982 and 1983–1984 he was a member of the General Directorate of Art of the Ministry of Culture. Between 1984 and 1987 he was spokesman for the board of directors of Patrimonio Nacional.
