Manuel de Souto-Maior

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Manuel de Souto-Maior ( Manuel de Sotto Mayor ) was a Portuguese colonial administrator.

Souto-Maior was Portuguese governor of Timor and Solor from 1710 to 1714 . He tried to make peace with the Topasse , the real rulers of the region, and rehabilitated the Liurai of Viqueque , Dom Mateus da Costa , whom his predecessor Jácome de Morais Sarmento had illegally arrested.

In 1714 Manuel Ferreira de Almeida took over the administration of the colony, although it is unclear whether he was a Portuguese governor or a Topasse who seized power.

The Fintas were introduced under Souto-Maior . Fintas were tribute payments by the kingdoms allied with Portugal in the form of natural produce, as was common between the Timorese rulers.
