Jácome de Morais Sarmento

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jácome de Morais Sarmento (* around 1675 ) was a Portuguese military and colonial administrator.

Between 1699 and 1703 he held the office of governor of Mozambique . From 1708 to 1710 he was governor of Timor and Solor .

Morais Sarmento is described as brave but reckless. Manuel de Santo António , the bishop of Malacca who resided in Timor , had helped Morais Sarmento to be accepted by the Topasse and Timorese. But there was a dispute between Morais Sarmento and Santo António. The governor let Santo António walk with the soldiers against his will during a military expedition against the rebellious kingdom of Motael .

Morais Sarmento finally gambled away all sympathies when he had Dom Mateus da Costa , the Liurai of Viqueque, arrested and humiliated in 1708 . Morais Sarmento had the impression that the ruler Manuel de Santo António had once converted to Christianity was too independent and wanted to replace Mateus. The ruler of the Topasse Domingos da Costa then besieged Lifau until 1709. Manuel de Santo António saved the situation by going to the camp of Domingos da Costa and persuaded the Topasse ruler to submit to the Portuguese crown again. The subsequent governor Manuel de Souto-Maior (1710 to 1714) rehabilitated Dom Mateus, but the alliance between the clergy and the civil administration was destroyed.

Later, Morais Sarmento was capitão-mor of the Navy in Portuguese India .
