Mao Anying

Mao Anying (毛岸英) (* 1922 in Changsha , Hunan Province ; † November 25, 1950 ) was the eldest son of Mao Zedong and his second wife Yang Kaihui .

Life

Mao Anying was born in Changsha, the capital of Hunan Province, and was the eldest of three siblings. His father left the family in 1927. The mother was executed in 1930 by the Kuomintang in Changsha. The youngest brother died shortly after the mother's death. There followed unsteady years in the care of various institutions and people together with his younger brother Mao Anqing . In 1936 Mao Anying was sent to an international boarding school in Moscow. He received his training there and at a military academy. In 1946 he returned to China to the Yan'an Communist Base . From October 1950 he took part in the Korean War as a Russian interpreter . He fell at the age of 28 in North Korea on November 25, 1950, five weeks after the first soldiers of the People's Liberation Army secretly crossed the Yalu River near Dandong to North Korea and intervened in the Korean War. Mao Anying was at Chinese headquarters when it was bombed by US fighter jets.
