Mapalagama Wipulasara Maha Thera

Mapalagama Wipulasara Maha Thera ( Sinhala මාපලගම විපුලසාර හිමි , born March 3, 1925 ; died October 28, 2000 ) was a Buddhist monk of the Theravada School in Sri Lanka . He was known as an artist and sculptor and has designed numerous Buddha statues in Sri Lanka and abroad. 1961 and 1963 he even had exhibitions in Soviet - Russia and China .

Mapalagama Wipulasara Maha Thera designed the Sri Lankan coat of arms in 1972 on the instructions of Nissanka Wijeyeratne , who was then the chairman of the National Emblem and Flag Design Committee . the handicraft work was carried out by SM Seneviratne.

Paarama Dhamma Chethiya Pirivena

As Maha Thera , Mapalagama Wipulasara was the Supreme Monk of the Parama Dhamma Chethiya Pirivena in Ratmalana. This is an international Buddhist institute where novices and monks from Sri Lanka and other countries conduct Buddhism studies and learn Sinhala , Pali , Sanskrit and English .

Honors

Mapalagama Wipulasara Maha Thera has received many honors and titles from various countries for his services to the Buddhist community ( Sangha ). In 1984 he received the Kalasoori Merit Award from Sri Lanka.
