The main roles are Thalía and Fernando Colunga, with the antagonistic participation of Itatí Cantoral. It features star appearances by Ludwika Paleta, Osvaldo Benavides, Ana Patricia Rojo, Yuliana Peniche and the first actors Iran Eory, Ricardo Blume, Meche Barba, Carmen Salinas and Ariadna Welter.

In recent years, knowledge of telenovela has crossed Mexico's borders thanks to one of the scenes starring Itatí Cantoral and Yuliana Peniche. Due to the overactivity of all actors, the age-related inconsistency of the roles played and the failed staging of the scene, it has become a popular meme on the internet.

history

Part One (Chapters 1–22)

Thalía is "María, la del barrio"

María Hernández " María, la del Barrio " is a modest, uneducated and dreamy young woman who lives with her godmother Casilda on the outskirts of Mexico City . She works as a recyclable waste collector in a landfill and is deeply in love with an attractive man whom she sees every day in church, where she often goes. On the day of Maria's 15th birthday, her godmother dies and on her deathbed she asks Father Honorio to find a place for her goddaughter to work and live.

Maria is welcomed to the home of the businessman Fernando de la Vega, one of the most influential and wealthy men in the country. He teaches Maria manners and welcomes her as a member of the family, though his wife Victoria and the maid Carlota despise Maria from the first moment.

There, Maria meets the man she was in love with and who happens to be called Luis Fernando. The eldest son of the De la Vega Montenegro couple, recently left by his girlfriend Brenda, he swears not to get emotionally involved with women, but only to play with them. To this end, he first gets involved with Maria, but eventually falls in love with her. Soraya Montenegro, Victoria's proud niece, is in love with her cousin Luis Fernando and wants to marry him. Soraya also despises Maria at all times and describes her as " marginal " (German: the "wild" ).

Maria gradually wins the friendship and trust of the residents and employees of the manor, including Victoria, who changes her attitude towards Maria, as well as Lupe, the housekeeper, and Vladimir and Vanessa, the other children of the De la Vega couple. Soraya, who obsessively wants to conquer Luis Fernando, takes advantage of his drunkenness and takes him to bed. After showing him a false pregnancy test, she forces him to marry her even though he loves Maria. To forget Luis Fernando, Maria begins to go out with Vladimir. She also starts taking etiquette classes from Doña Caro, a teacher specially hired by Don Fernando to teach Maria good manners. Luis Fernando is also going through a personality change: he matures, stops drinking and starts to work in his father's company. He begins to suspect that Soraya is not pregnant, so he forces her to take another pregnancy test as she says she miscarried.

When Soraya marries Luis Fernando, she moves to the Villa de la Vega to live with her Nana Calixta (who has been looking after her since she was a child) and has a constant fight with Maria, who she hates more and more and decides to kill her. Calixta, who is also a healer and witch, helps Soraya put poisonous herbs in Maria's water. Maria begins to fall ill and is sent to the hospital, where she finds out the cause of the illness. Soraya has a lover named Osvaldo Treviño who discovers the evil plot and its threat; if she has not given him any money, Soraya goes to his house and kills him, then returns to the villa and beats Calixta believing that she told Osvaldo of her plan that leads him to reveal Soraya that she is is his true mother; Soraya throws her out of the villa full of hatred. The next morning, Osvaldo calls Soraya because she failed to kill him the way she thought and asks for money if she doesn't want him to report her to attempted murder. Soraya goes with him again, and in a fierce fight tries again to kill him, but eventually falls out of an apartment window. Luis Fernando is informed and when he visits her in the hospital, Soraya dies.

Part Two (Chapters 23-55)

After Soraya's death, Luis Fernando is free, but a conflict arises between him and his brother Vladimir, as María has to choose who to stay with. María chooses Luis Fernando and Vladimir, disappointed and upset, leaves the house because he can no longer bear to see her together. Luis Fernando and María finally marry happily, but during their honeymoon and even more so on their return to Mexico, because at the beginning of their marriage, Luis Fernando begins to suspect that María and her brother are lovers, and when Vladimir goes to the manor to himself to apologize to María for not showing up for her wedding, Luis Fernando sees them embracing. This causes Luis Fernando to abandon María. The De la Vega family goes to Spain to visit Vladimir, who lives there, and leaves María and Luis Fernando alone in the house.

María discovers that she is pregnant and finds support and friendship in Lupe, the housekeeper. She spends the entire pregnancy with personality disorders and depression in which she feels feverish and very ill. Shortly before the birth of her child, Luis Fernando sends a letter requesting a divorce to Maria, who leaves the manor in despair. On the street, Maria feels the pain of childbirth and is taken to a hospital where she gives birth to a son and calls him Fernando. She is released with her baby, mentally unbalanced and desperate she begins to roam the streets with her son in her arms. Desperate, she hands her child over to a humble woman named Agripina in a garden. María is admitted to a mental hospital, Luis Fernando returns to seek her for a divorce, but Lupe explains to him that María was never unfaithful to her brother and that she is missing. Luis Fernando regrets this and finds María and asks her to forgive him and learns of his son's disappearance. In an unsuccessful search for his baby and in an attempt to alleviate María's pain, he adopts a girl named María de los Angeles, who is nicknamed "Tita". María de los Ángeles, who has now recovered, accepts the child but decides to search tirelessly for her prodigal son. Lupe hires Penelope, her goddaughter, to look after Tita. Penélope treats Tita badly, falls in love with Luis Fernando and the two become lovers. After discovering the truth, María dismisses Penelope and asks Luis Fernando for a divorce. However, he asks María for forgiveness and she accepts her.

Fourteen years have passed and María, who was tirelessly looking for her son, could not find him. Fernando, simply called Nando, is now 15 years old and lived in a modest neighborhood next to his adoptive mother Agripina, who raised him very well, works as a lottery ticket seller and doesn't let his mother work. She decides to work secretly from her son and one night Agripina has an accident and is hospitalized. Unable to buy medicine for his mother, Nando is persuaded by a friend in the neighborhood to steal from a wealthy household. Without thinking, Nandito enters María's house and is caught by her and Luis Fernando, who arrives and points a gun at him. Nandito explains that he stole because he urgently needed money to buy medicine for his mother, who is in the hospital, but Luis Fernando takes him to the police station and is arrested. When Maria learns of this situation, she inquires at the hospital where Agripina is lying. Agripina says thanks after recovering and knowing she paid for the medication and, enjoying her trust, reveals to Maria that Nando is not her son and that a madwoman gave him to her fourteen years ago and confirms with the fact that Nando is the son she has been looking for for years. Agripina is very worried about Nando, and Maria says she hired him to work at her house. Maria begins to support him without his knowing that she is his real mother. Time goes by and Tita, now 16, thinks that Nando is her mother's lover. Penélope, now married to a villain, José María Cano "Papacito", returns to blackmail Maria by asking for money if she does not tell Tita that she has been adopted and tells everyone that Nando her lover is. In a conversation with Tita, María confesses that Nando is her son.

María Nando later tells that he is her son and that he moved to the De la Vega family to live with them. Luis Fernando, who moved out of the house without knowing he was her son, believes Maria brought her lover to her own house, takes his gun and goes to kill him. After trying to shoot Nando, Maria screams that he is her son, and Luis Fernando begins to cry. Maria hugs Nando and explains everything that happened to Luis Fernando. He asks Mary for forgiveness and she forgives him. Penélope and José María are arrested for extorting them.
