Ulrich Sturzenegger

Ulrich Sturzenegger (* 25. September 1714 in Trogen , † 26. November 1781 ibid ; heimatberechtigt ) was a Swiss businessman , calendar makers and local politicians from the canton of Appenzell Outer Rhodes .

Life

Ulrich Sturzenegger was the son of Michael Sturzenegger, councilor and farmer and the Elsbeth Altherr. Sturzenegger married his first wife Barbara Waldburger in 1746, daughter of Jakob Waldburger, mayor of Teufen . Seven years later in 1753 he married Margreth Zellweger, daughter of Jakob Zellweger. In 1756 he married his third wife Elsbeth Bruderer, daughter of Ulrich Bruderer, mayor of Trogen.

In order to be able to do calendar calculations, the farmer Sturzenegger acquired autodidactic knowledge in mathematics and astronomy . From 1745 he was the publisher of the popular Appenzell calendar , which was initially printed in St. Gallen . In 1766 he founded a printing company in Trogen. It was the first to exist in Ausserrhoden. The state government reacted by creating a censorship authority . After his death, his sons took over the business. In addition, operational Sturzenegger a Web - and embroidery manufacturing business and managed a farm. From 1757 to 1781 he was councilor of Trogen.
