María Asunción Aramburuzabala Larregui (born May 2, 1963 in Mexico City ) is a Mexican entrepreneur. It is a major shareholder in the Mexican group of companies Grupo Modelo (manufacturer of Corona beer ) and Grupo Televisa .

Origin and education

Aramburuzabala is one of the richest women in Mexico and one of the most influential women in Latin America. Aramburuzabala and her family's fortune was estimated at $ 2 billion by Forbes Magazine in 2007 . Most of their wealth is inherited. Her grandfather, Félix Aramburuzabala, an immigrant from the Spanish Basque Country to Mexico, founded the leading Mexican brewery Grupo Modelo. Her father Pablo Aramburuzabala inherited her and expanded the group.

María Asunción Aramburuzabala attended the German School in Mexico City and successfully studied accounting and controlling at the Instituto Tecnológico Autónomo de México . At the age of 18 she married the eight years older businessman Paulo Patricio Zapata Navarro, with whom she had two children. The marriage ended in divorce after 15 years. Since 2005 she has been married to Tony Garza , the current Ambassador of the United States to Mexico, for the second time .

Business life

After the death of her father in 1995, she became vice president of the brewery group. With successful strategic decisions, she earned a reputation for being not just an heir, but a capable entrepreneur. With her fortune, she pursued a targeted diversification strategy that made her a major shareholder in the most important Mexican companies.

In 1998 she sold the majority of the inherited shares to the American Anheuser-Busch Companies group, but still holds 10% and is a member of the board of directors. The president of the Grupo Modelo, Carlos Fernández, is married to Aramburuzabala's sister Lucrecia. Since 2000 she has also been a major shareholder and member of the board of directors of Emilio Azcárraga Jean's Televisa group , in which she holds around 10% of the shares. She is also a shareholder and member of the boards of directors of Grupo Financiero Banamex , the telecommunications group Telmex (led by Carlos Slim Helú ) as well as the data service provider Kio Networks and the real estate company BCBA. She is the founder and CEO of the Tresalia Capital investment fund.

In 2006 Forbes Magazine named her as the only Latin American woman among the 100 Most Powerful Women in the World .
