Manuel "Mar" Araneta Roxas II (born May 13, 1957 in Manila ) is a Filipino politician of the Liberal Party of the Philippines .

Life

Mar Roxas comes from an influential family of politicians. His grandfather, Manuel Roxas, was the governor , MP, and President of the Philippines from 1946 to 1948 . His father Gerardo Roxas Sr. was also an MP and Senator, while his brother Gerardo Roxas junior was also a MP from 1987 to 1992.

After visiting the elementary school and the high school of the Ateneo de Manila University , he studied from 1974 to 1979 economics at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania .

He then entered the private sector and, in the following years, was director of Kauswagan Development Corp. , the Myapo Prawn Farm Corp. , Vice President of Progressive Development Corp. as well as President of Northstar Capital Inc. and Atok Big Wedge Mining Co. He was also involved in community and social organizations and was a co-founder of the Books for the Barangay Foundation Inc. and the Capiz Alliance for Ecological Development Inc.

In 1992 he began his political career as a member of the LAKAS-CMD ( Lakas-Kabalikat ng Malayang Pilipino-Christian Muslim Democrats ) and was elected for the first time as a member of the House of Representatives of the Philippines ( Kapulungán ng mgá Kinatawán ng Pilipinas ). After his re-elections in 1995 and 1998, he represented the interests of the 1st electoral district of the Capiz Province until 2001.

In 2001, Mar Roxas was promoted from President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo to Secretary of Trade and Industry in her cabinet . He held the ministerial office until December 2003.

He then ran for the LAKAS-CMD for a mandate in the Senate ( Senado ng Pilipinas ) and was a member of the Senate from 2004 to 2010 after his election. During his membership in the Senate, he chaired the committees on economics and on trade and industry. He was also deputy chairman of the committee for public works and a member of several other committees.

After the announcement of Benigno Aquino III. To run for the office of president in the elections in the Philippines in 2010 , he withdrew his previously announced candidacy and instead became a vice-presidential candidate Aquinos ("running-mate") for the Partido Liberal.

In the elections on May 10, 2010, Roxas was defeated by the vice-presidential candidate of the Democratic Party of Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan Jejomar Binay , the competitor of the former President Joseph Estrada . While Roxas received 13,918,490 of the vote (39.58 percent), Binay received 14,645,574 (41.65%).

He has been the Philippine Interior Minister since 2012.
