Jejomar Cabauatan Binay (born November 11, 1942 in Paco, Manila ) is a Filipino politician of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan. He was the longtime mayor of Makati City . From 2010 to 2016 he was Vice President of the Philippines. Often he is also called Jojo Binay .

biography

Studies and professional activities

After attending the Preparatory High School of the University of the Philippines , he first studied political science and law at the University of the Philippines (UP), where he earned a Bachelor of Arts (AB Political Science) and a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) . He then completed first a postgraduate degree in public administration with a focus on local government at the UP and graduated with a Master of Arts (MA Public Administration (Local Government Management). A further post-graduate studies in law at the University of Santo Tomas , he finished with a Master of Laws (LL.M.). After studying National Security Administration at the National Defense College of the Philippines , he earned an MA in National Security Administration with Honors, and then studied Management at Philippine Christian University , which he graduated with a degree an MA Management.

After his admission as a lawyer , he worked as a lawyer. He was also a lecturer and professor of law at the Philippine College of Commerce, the Philippine Women's University , St. Scholastica's College and the National Defense College for some time .

Mayor of Makati

After the overthrow of President Ferdinand Marcos in February 1986, he began to get involved in politics and was elected mayor of Makati City for the first time as a representative of LABAN. This post he held until November 1987. During his tenure, he was also from March to November 1987 Chairman of the Commission for Metro Manila ( Metropolitan Manila Commission ) between May and November director of the water company - and the sewage system of Metro Manila ( Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System ), from June to November 1987 Director of the Light Railway Transit Authority and the Laguna Lake Development Authority . In 2001 he was re-elected Mayor of Makati City and held that office until June 2010.

In addition, he was involved in numerous socio-political and social organizations and including President of the Boy Scouts ( Boy Scouts of the Philippines ), President of the League of Mayor of Metro Manila ( Metro Manila Mayors' League ), member of the board of trustees of the Foundation of Jeepney -Driver ( Jeepney Drivers' Foundation, Inc. ) and a member of the Makati Lions and Rotary clubs .

Elected Vice President 2010

In the elections on May 10, 2010 he was a competitor of the former president and presidential candidate of Pwersa ng Masang Pilipino Joseph Estrada for the office of vice-president and as a candidate of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan his running mate . He won against the candidate of the Liberal Party and vice-presidential candidate of Benigno Aquino III. , Senator Mar Roxas . While Roxas received 13,918,490 of the vote (39.58 percent), Binay received 14,645,574 (41.65%).

Jejomar Binay was elected Vice President of the Philippines and took office on June 30, 2010 after President Aquino was sworn in.
