Leni Robredo (2013)

Maria Leonor Gerona Robredo , called Leni Robredo (born April 23, 1964 as Maria Leonor Sto. Tomas Gerona in Naga City , Camarines Sur province ), is a Filipino lawyer and politician ( liberal ). From 2013 to 2016 she was a member of the House of Representatives . She has been the Vice President of the Philippines since June 2016.

Life

She is the eldest of three daughters of a judge. She first studied economics at the University of the Philippines Diliman and graduated in 1986 with a bachelor's degree. She then went on to study law at Nueva Caceres University and received her Bachelor of Laws in 1990 . In 1987 she married Jesse Robredo , a Liberal Party politician who served as mayor of Naga City from 1988–98 and again 2001–10 and Minister of Interior of the Philippines from 2010–12. They have three daughters together.

In 1989 Leni Robredo founded the organization Lakas ng Kababaihan ng Naga , which works to improve educational and life opportunities for women in Naga. In 1996 she was admitted to the bar and then worked in the office of public attorney (legal representative of the Philippine government). From 2007 she worked as a coordinator for SALIGAN, a non-governmental organization that organizes legal assistance for farmers, poor and marginalized groups.

After the death of her husband in a plane crash in August 2012, Leni Robredo went into politics himself. In the same year she became party leader of the Liberal Party in her home province of Camarines Sur. In the general election in May 2013 she was elected to the House of Representatives of the Philippines for the 3rd constituency of Camarines Sur.

At the end of 2015, the Liberal Party nominated her as a vice-presidential candidate in the 2016 election , where she ran as the running mate of the presidential candidate Mar Roxas . The two offices are elected by the people, independently of each other, and the recommendations of the parties are not binding. While Roxas was clearly defeated by Rodrigo Duterte of the PDP-Laban , Robredo was elected vice-president with 35.1% (just ahead of second-placed Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ). Despite significant political differences, such as the death penalty , which Duterte strongly supports and Robredo opposes, she has announced that she will support the president in his administration. She was sworn in as Vice President on June 30, 2016.
