Marais Viljoen (born December 2, 1915 in Robertson , Cape Province , † January 4, 2007 in Pretoria ) was a South African politician. He was the last non-full-time head of state in the Republic of South Africa.

Viljoen was President of South Africa from August 21, 1978 to October 10, 1978, followed by Balthazar Johannes Vorster , and again from June 4, 1979 to September 3, 1984. After a constitutional reform, he was followed by the previous Prime Minister, Pieter Willem Botha .

family

Viljoen was the youngest of six children. On April 20, 1940, he married Dorothea Maria Brink (September 17, 1917 - October 6, 2005). He had a daughter and a son.

Political party

Viljoen was a member of the National Party that initiated the apartheid regime . There he was, however, a moderate advocate of apartheid policy. Before he took office as President, he was Senate President (1976 to 1979), during his term of office, compulsory education ( Bantu Education Act ) was introduced for blacks.

Before his political career, Viljoen worked for the post office and later for the newspaper " Die Transvaler ".

Marais Viljoen died of heart failure on January 4, 2007 at the age of 91 in Pretoria.
