Jacobus Johannes Fouché

Jacobus Johannes "Jim" Fouché (born June 6, 1898 in Wepener , † September 23, 1980 in Cape Town ) was a South African politician and from January 10, 1968 to April 10, 1975 the President of South Africa .

Life

Fouché was born in Wepener in the Boer Republic of Orange Free State (today the Province of Free State ), where he managed a large farm. He was a member of the National Party for many years . In 1955 he received an honorary doctorate from Stellenbosch University . He was married to Letta McDonald; From the marriage came a son, the lawyer and ambassador Jacobus Johannes "Bux" Fouché.

Political career

Between 1950 and 1959, Fouché served as administrator of the Orange Free State Province. He was then appointed to the cabinet, where he served as Minister of Defense until 1966 and as Minister of Agriculture and Water from 1966 to 1968. He was then elected President after the previously elected Theophilus Dönges died before his inauguration. Fouché is the only president to have served his seven-year term in full.
