Marathon Oil Corporation is an international energy company. The company is mainly active in the production of hydrocarbons ( oil sands ) and natural gas. The company also produces oil in Canada , Equatorial Guinea , Libya , Indonesia , Great Britain and the USA . The company's headquarters are in Houston .
history
The Ohio Oil Company was founded in 1887. In 1889 the company was taken over by the Standard Oil Company and incorporated into the company. In 1911 the Standard Oil Company was finally broken up . 34 individual companies emerged from the company, including the Marathon Oil Corporation .
In 1998, the Marathon Oil Corporation formed together with Ashland Inc. the subsidiary Marathon Ashland Petroleum LLC . Marathon Ashland Petroleum took over the distribution of petroleum products in the United States. On June 30, 2005, Marathon Oil Corporation bought Ashland's 50% stake. Thus the subsidiary belongs 100% to the company.
In 2003 the company sold its shares in Husky Energy to billionaire Li Ka-shing .
Marathon Oil is increasingly relying on oil sands. In 2009 the company produced 600 million barrels of synthetic oil from oil sands.
On July 1, 2011, the downstream business (refineries and petrol stations) was spun off as Marathon Petroleum , which also took over the old Marathon Oil logo.
In 2014 the stores in Angola and Norway were sold.
