Marc Alfred Chataud (born August 17, 1833 in Marseille , † May 11, 1908 in Algiers ) was a French painter of Orientalism .

Marc Alfred Chataud was the son of a banker, studied law and then worked for an insurance company in Paris. From 1857 to 1860 he was a pupil of Émile Loubon's drawing school in Marseille . He continued his studies in Paris in the studio of Charles Gleyre .

His family owned real estate in Algeria. Chataud visited the country several times from 1856 before finally settling near Sidi Moussa in the Algiers prefecture in 1892 .

In the salons from 1864 to 1885 he exhibited paintings with orientalist motifs. For several years he was influenced by the melodramatic style of Henri Regnault . He later painted realistic scenes from the life of the Arab population.

In 1897 he participated in the establishment of the Société des Artistes Algeriens and in 1904 became its deputy chairman. He is one of the painters of the so-called École d'Alger .
