Marc Laureys

Marc Laureys (* 1963 in Mechelen ) is a Belgian philologist in the field of Latin studies. He is professor for Middle and New Latin Philology at the University of Bonn .

Life

Laureys studied Classical Philology (M.A. 1985) and Philosophy (B.A. 1986) at the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven . He continued his studies at Harvard University , where he received his Ph. D. in Medieval Latin in 1992 . From 1993 to 1996 he was a Junior Research Fellow at the Belgian Nationaal Fonds voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek .

Since 1997, Laureys has been Dieter Schaller's successor on the professorship for Medieval and Modern Latin Philology at the University of Bonn . He was and is involved in various international research projects. From 1997 to 2003 he was a member of the DFG graduate college The Renaissance in Italy and its European Reception . Since 2003 he has been a member of the Humanisme in de Nederlanden Commission of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Sciences and Arts . In 2005 he founded the Center for the Classical Tradition at the University of Bonn together with Uwe Baumann and Konrad Vössing , and has been its spokesperson ever since. As part of the Excellence Initiative , he was in charge of the Theodosius Schoepffer's Gerontologia seu Tractatus de jure senum (1705) project from 2005 to 2006 .

Laureys was visiting professor at the Villa I Tatti in Florence (autumn 2005) and at the Center d'Études Supérieures de la Renaissance in Tours (February 2011). He is a member of various academic societies, including the International Association for Neo-Latin Studies (2000–2003 second vice-president; 2015–2018 first vice-president; 2018–2021 president) and the Società Internazionale per lo Studio del Medio Evo Latino .
