Origin and development
The first international congress for the promotion of neo-Latin research took place in Leuven ( Belgium ) in August 1971. It was brought into being by the founder of the Seminarium Philologiae Humanisticae at the University of Leuven , Professor Dr. Jozef IJsewijn († 1998). In the course of this first congress, the idea of an international association to promote neo-Latin research was born. This association was founded during the second congress ( Amsterdam , 1973). There, the English-language statutes drawn up by a statute committee chaired by Richard Schoeck were accepted by the general assembly. At the Third Congress ( Tours , 1976), the official Latin text of these statutes was approved and published in Humanistica Lovaniensia , 26 (1977), pp. 265-71. Since then, congresses have taken place every three years (the name in brackets denotes the respective local organizer):
