The fashion label Marc O'Polo was founded in 1967 in Stockholm by Swedes Rolf Lind, Göte Huss and the American Jerry O'Sheets . The core of the brand identity is the use of natural materials. The German subsidiary Marc O'Polo Germany was founded in 1968 by Werner Böck with headquarters in Stephanskirchen (Rosenheim district). In 1987 Werner Böck took over 40 percent of the shares in the Swedish parent company. In the course of the takeover of another 40 percent by Werner Böck in 1997, Marc O'Polo International GmbH was founded in Stephanskirchen and the company's headquarters were relocated from Stockholm to Stephanskirchen.

Around 1,900 employees work internationally for Marc O'Polo with a turnover of around 460 million euros (financial year 2016/2017, as of 2018). There are a total of over 1,000 partner companies worldwide. In the 2011/2012 financial year, the company achieved brand sales of around EUR 404 million (previous year: EUR 370 million). In 2009 the company won the Forum Prize from the textile industry magazine .

The company was able to win over photographer Peter Lindbergh for an advertising campaign with Jeff Bridges , Uma Thurman and Lara Stone .
