The Knisterbach is an orographically right tributary of the Wapel in North Rhine-Westphalia , Germany . It has a length of 13.5 km.

River course

The Knisterbach rises about 89 meters above sea level in the Verler district of Sürenheide . The watercourse, which can be classified as a lowland stream, is created by several outflows from the meadow landscape there. Just a few meters below the source area, a downpipe leads to the Menkebach, which runs only slightly further north, and thus ensures a constant connection between the waters.

The Knisterbach flows further in a south-westerly direction through Sürenheide and then through the industrial area there, in which it feeds some extinguishing water ponds. Within the industrial area, the brook crosses the city limits of Gütersloh , then crosses under federal motorway 2 and runs through the Gütersloh district of Spexard . Initially the settlement area flows through here, but then the stream also runs over meadows with partial woodland on the banks. When crossing another built-up area, the Knisterbach is temporarily piped.

In the further course, the water then flows in more rural and partly wooded terrain below the Gütersloh district of Kattenstroth . For a short time the Knisterbach also enters the Rheda-Wiedenbrücker area and forms the city limit to Gütersloh in a small section. The Knisterbach finally flows into the Wapel southwest of Kattenstroth and back on Gütersloher Boden . Shortly before the mouth of the river, another trap is led over a retention basin to the Wapelbad , where this trap also flows into that river.

The Knisterbach overcomes a height difference of 18 meters during its flow section, resulting in an average bed gradient of 1.3 ‰.

environment

The water quality of the Knisterbach is impaired in several places by industrial wastewater and agricultural influences and, according to the 2001 water quality report of the State Environmental Agency of North Rhine-Westphalia, was in a very polluted state throughout. In the meantime, however, there are efforts to improve the water quality and the condition of the bank flora through various measures.
