Marc Aristide Rieffel (born December 22, 1937 in New York City ) is an American mathematician who deals with operator algebras , non-commutative harmonic analysis and quantum geometries (including non-commutative geometry in the sense of Alain Connes ). He is a professor at the University of California, Berkeley .

Marc Rieffel, Oberwolfach 2011

Rieffel studied at Harvard University with a bachelor's degree in 1959 and received his doctorate in 1963 under Richard Kadison at Columbia University ( A characterization of commutative group algebras and measure algebras ). He was then a lecturer at Berkeley University from 1963, becoming an assistant professor, an associate professor in 1968 and a professor in 1973.

In the 1970s he developed the theory of the Morita equivalence of C * algebras and introduced strong deformation quantization.

He is a fellow of the American Mathematical Society .

Jonathan Rosenberg is one of his PhD students .
