Marc Van Montagu
Marc Van Montagu (born November 10, 1933 in Ghent ) is a Belgian molecular biologist . He was Professor and Director of the Genetics Laboratory at Ghent University and Scientific Director of the Genetics Department of the Flanders Interuniversity Institute for Biotechnology (VIB).
Together with Jozef Schell , he discovered the mechanism of gene transfer between Agrobacterium tumefaciens and plants. He then developed the transformation by Agrobacterium tumefaciens , which is used today in the production of transgenic plants worldwide.
In 1990 he was awarded the Prix Charles-Léopold Mayer , in 1998 the Japan Prize and in 2013 the World Food Prize . In 1986 he became a member ( Foreign Associate ) of the National Academy of Sciences . In 1989 he was elected a full member of the Academia Europaea . Since 1991 he has been a foreign member of the Russian Academy of Sciences . He is an honorary doctor from several universities.
