Prix Charles-Léopold Mayer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Prix Charles Léopold Mayer is a science prize awarded annually by the French Académie des sciences for basic research in the field of biology , biochemistry and biophysics . It is named after Charles Léopold Mayer (1881–1971), an Irish-French chemist, financier and philanthropist .

The prize is awarded regardless of the nationality and place of residence of the award winner, but it should not be awarded to awardees from the same foreign country (“nationaux d'un même pays étranger”) for two consecutive years. The prize money of 25,000 euros (as of 2018) is not intended to support the winner, but to promote further research, which is why people over 65 years of age are excluded from the award.

14 of the 70 award winners (as of mid-2018) later received a Nobel Prize .
