Charles David Allis
Charles David Allis (born March 22, 1951 in Cincinnati , Ohio ) is an American biologist and professor at Rockefeller University in New York City .
Life
Allis earned a bachelor's degree in biology from the University of Cincinnati in Cincinnati , Ohio in 1973 . In 1975 he received a Masters in Biology from Indiana University in Bloomington , Indiana , and in 1978 a Ph.D. there. Allis worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Rochester in Rochester , New York . His first junior professorship (1981 Assistant Professor, 1986 Associate Professor) was in the Department of Biochemistry at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston , Texas , from 1988 Department of Biochemistry and Cell Biology , and in 1989 a full professorship there. In 1990 Allis moved to Syracuse University in Syracuse , New York, as Professor of Biology , before taking on the same position at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York in 1995. In 1997 and 1998 he was also Professor of Oncology at the School of Medicine there . Between 1998 and 2003, Allis was Professor of Microbiology and Professor of Biochemistry and Molecular Genetics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville , Virginia . Since 2003 he has been Professor of Chromatin Biology and Epigenetics and Head of the laboratory of the same name at Rockefeller University in New York City .
Act
Allis' research revolves around chromatin , the complex of deoxyribonucleic acid and proteins in which the genetic information in the cell nucleus is densely packed. Chromatin plays a crucial role in gene expression by releasing certain sections of the genome for further steps in transcription or not. Allis' work deals with the processes and chemical changes that determine chromatin structure and function. One possible application is to try to switch on genes that hinder tumor growth and switch off those that promote tumor growth. The subject of research are in particular various mechanisms of histone modification and the histone code .
