Florkin studied medicine at the University of Liège and received his doctorate there. He was director of the Biochemical Institute at the University of Liège.

Florkin was a pioneer in comparative biochemistry and the study of the evolutionary aspects of biochemistry. He is also considered to be the co-founder of biosemiotics , with the help of which he sought to describe the interactions between biomolecules.

In 1946 Florkin received the Francqui Prize . In 1951 he was a co-founder of the Belgian Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology . Florkin was also President of the International Academy of the History of Medicine, founded in 1964 . Since 1961 he was a member of the Leopoldina and since 1955 an honorary member ( Honorary Fellow ) of the Royal Society of Edinburgh .

He was editor of Comparative Biochemistry (with HS Mason, 1960 to 1964), Chemical Zoology (with BT Scheer 1967 to 1978) and Comprehensive Biochemistry (with EH Stotz, 1962 to 1979)
