Marcel Wassmer (born April 10, 1949 in Bethoncourt , † April 18, 1979 ) was a French football player .

Career

Wassmer grew up in the catchment area of FC Sochaux and accordingly joined this club, for which he began his professional career in the top French division for the 1969/70 season at the age of 20. With strong performances in his second year he was able to convince head coach Paul Barret , who made him a regular player. Third place in the table in 1972 was followed by several mediocre years, even if Wassmer had a personal success in 1974 when he played for the French B national team in a win against Luxembourg. At Sochaux, the professional footballer was occasionally given the role of team captain. After being firmly in midfield alongside Abdel Djaadaoui for a long time , he ultimately lost his role as a regular.

This prompted him to move to the second division SAS Épinal in 1977 . There he was given a regular seat again and held an important position within the team. His career came to an abrupt end when he died of complications from an aneurysm on April 18, 1979, eight days after his 30th birthday .
